PORTUGUESE NATIONALITY

Who is eligible?

Generally speaking – and provided that other requirements are met – a person can apply for Portuguese nationality on the grounds of:

• Residence in Portugal for 5 or more years;

• Birth in Portugal;

• Descending from Portuguese parents or grandparents;

• Marriage or registered partnership/civil union with a Portuguese citizen for 3 or more years;

• Having lost the Portuguese nationality for the acquisition of another one;

• Descending from Portuguese Sephardic Jews expelled from Portugal in the 15th and 16th century;

• Birth in the ancient State of India (Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadrá or Nagar-Aveli) before 20th December 1961.
